I think I have good soil for the Rex then. It seems springy and mossy. How about the kitchen?...That might be a proper home for it in the winter. If you have much experience with african violets, they can be grown similarly. But av's are a little more delicate with regards to their soil. Rex's like the peaty part that retains moister, but they don't really want much moisture retained. That's why it helps to add pine fines (soil conditioner) to the potting soil to give them a lighter soil. You can try putting it close to the sink, but I wouldn't have high hopes of it being a big improvement. I know how dry it is in northern climes in the winter with gas heat. If you could tent it in the winter, that would be the best bet, but I'd just count on trimming damaged leaves in the spring and giving them the summer outdoors.

For the first few years, we had icicle lights on the greenhouse in the winter. They even gave off enough light so that I could do minor things at night. Yours is a tad big to string lights on without special equipment.

No, poinsettias would be very unhappy outdoors here. But I could get one of those big blowup santas. Maybe it would scare the deer away. That's EXACTLY what you need! Just put a motion sensor on it so that it starts to inflate when something comes around (it'd have to have a hole in it so it wouldn't stay inflated). Or you could get Beej to rig one up for you that might take out a few of the enemy with it.

Jeana, by tenting do you mean plastic over the top of them? Loosely? It is so dry here it is ridiculous. My humidifier is going24/7.

You can use poke some sticks in the pot and drape a dry cleaning bag over it. I'd be brown around the edges if I lived up there, too.

Well that sounds like a plan! We tend to be frosty white around the edges at this time of the year. Brown comes when we finally have summer and we are frantically digging in the dirt for all we're worth.

Wow - if I dug in the ground for all I was worth, I wouldn't get very deep.
