I like winter hats. I don't like my ears to be cold.

How DARE you use that kind of language here!!
Nope, a orientalis x. The nigers have their nice fat flower buds right at ground level and will be opening in about a month.

Winter what? It dropped to seven this morning. At least it's clear and dry, not foggy. Personally, if it wants to get this cold it really aughtta snow.

deb, nothing like being snow-bound with good smells coming from the kitchen! hope you have the brownie drop ingredients (can't substitute the german sweet chocolate for another type, i'm afraid) and let me know if any survive the initial taste-testing, LOL. and be sure to freeze those you don't eat right away (within one day. after that, they get dry & crumbly, which is not how they are supposed to be. still taste good, just not sublime) let me know how you like them! ~roxanna

When we lived in Seattle, that July, the highest temp was 59*. Miserable. Just miserable. But August made up for it. I used to live in the PNW when I was a small regalitite. One Aug. we went away for the entire month without making any arrangements for yard care. I mean, who the heck needed anyone to water the yard during the summer there. Well, it seems that we did. We came back to a completely fried yard...even the Bing cherries on the tree were dried. It had gotten up to 109!

I may sound like a big old whiner to you who have "real winters", but it stayed down around 28 most of last night and I'm sincerely worried for the oranges, mandarins, limes, and the first crop of lemons I was going to get from the baby tree. I think the grapefruits will be okay since it's fairly protected under a massive catalpa. Of course, the brugs are temporary goners and the tuberous begonias as well. However, I usually leave the begonias out for the first freeze anyway to knock down all the leftover growth, so that's no real problem. *whine*

"I used to live in the PNW when I was a small regalitite."
not to be argumentative, but SF Bay is still the PNW. Only just, but it is. I know, when I lived there I thought I lived in another world too.

Ok, no talking about brownies unless you made enough for everybody.

jeana, if you mean the brownie drops i gave the recipe for on another thread, they aren't brownies at all, really. they are definitely a cookie, small & chewy with intense chocolate-cinnamon flavor. soooo good!
i'll make enough to share when i get around to baking my own, but you'd have to come up here to get them! just wait until i finish decorating -- if you sit still too long, i am likely to fling a garland around you (if it doesn't move, it gets festooned with festive fripperies). ~roxanna

Regality, I don't blame you for being worried! It is like if we get an unexpected frost. there's not much you can do but wait to see what damage is done...

Ah, yes, Winter Wonderland. It hit seven this morning, twenty-six this afternoon, and going down again now. One more day like today and then it's supposed to start warming with rain by Saturday. The big question is whether it will rise above freezing before the rain hits. Freezing rain is the absolute worst.
