I live in a teensy town without a lot of choices at our local grocer. I have a few recipes that have espresso powder in the ingredient list. There is no such thing in town. When I get out of town, I'm not really sure what to look for. I am thinking in particular about a brownie recipe I got from the first season of america's test kitchen. Where do you get espresso powder and what exactly is it? Will instant coffee or strong brewed coffee work?

I don't know if they have Safeway markets at the nearest big town; if not check the big chain store they have. My Safeway carries instant espresso in the coffee aisle right next to the instant coffee. Best brand I've found is Medaglia D'Oro. Makes some awesome desserts

Thanks Marty, I will write that brand down! We have something called SuperOne, nearest biggish one is Copps IGA and of course 40 miles from walmart, which has a big grocery part, but selection is amazingly not so great. Nice thing, though, long story, is our superone is doubling it's size right now. We will have a good sized grocery instead of 2 little ones. Yay for us!

If you can't find the Medaglia D'Oro, I would be happy to send you some. Just email me with your address, and I'll pick some up for you. If you have amazon prime, though, that's probably the way to go!

So if they double their size do they become a SuperTwo?

LOL! Right now there are two stores. Superone bought out the little local iga. So some people call them super one and super two! And some call them superone north and super one south. Eventually the whole operation will be in the new, expanded site super one south. Meanwhile they are both open, and have slightly different things. Just because life isn't confusing enough! They are going to be installing the new freezer section and putting product in it this week. We will have 75 freezer doors!!!! Woo hoo! there are probably 20 - 25 right now. Life will be good in little old Park Falls Madmom, thank you so much for the offer!! How nice of you. I will go to Amazon, since I have to order something else for Christmas presents yet.

It will be Super One- it is a regional change. But I think your idea is more inventive!!

My latest edition of Cook's Illustrated (Fall Entertaining Issue) had the following advice for substituting instant coffee for instant espresso: "In the end, if you can't find instant espresso powder, we recommend replacing it with the same amount of instant coffee in baked goods and with double the amount in creamy applications like puddings, frostings, and mousses, which contain proportionately more chocolate as a percentage of the total ingredients." I made the Cappuccino Semifreddo with Almond Biscotti for friends recently. OMG it's to die for!
