We are hosting Christmas Dinner at our house this year, on New Year's Day. It seemed like a good plan to spread things out a little over the holidays since all us kids have babies and don't go partying anymore.
I'd like to put together an all-out Southern Style spread similar to what I enjoyed while I lived in the deep south. I only have one copy of Southern Living magazine though, and a thin cookbook called "The Historic Homes of Georgia's Recipe Book." I need resources.
Any suggestions for either things to cook, or places to find menus? What about appetizer ideas? I don't need to know how to prepare or serve or buy chitlins.
Thanks in advance, Dagwood

You know that Southerners love holidays! Gretchen (at CT) has a good recipe for shrimp and grits, and I also have one, made with grits flavored with ale and cheese, ala welsh rarebit. I know that people grimace, but no southern dinner is complete without deviled eggs. Stay away from Paula Deen, she starts every recipe with a cup of butter and a cup of sugar! You'll have a cardiac event just reading her recipes. Ham is always good, and homemade biscuits are wonderful, but if you are biscuit impaired (as I am) the frozen ones by Mary B are wonderful. Thin sliced ham served on a biscuit with a bit of mustard or mayo is heaven! If you have any ideas, let me know, and I'll try to get you some recipes.

Sounds like a possibility at least!

I get a newsletter from the smittenkitchen.com and she had a really yummy sounding recipe called cream biscuits. It is a pretty cool blog. I made the brown butter rice krispie treats and they are divine. Have plans to make the brussel sprouts balsamic with pancetta (something like that), too. Good eats!
