it's a white world out there this morning and very pretty from this side of the window glass where i plan to stay. maybe 5 inches of the heavy wet stuff fell overnight and is clinging to every twiglet, which is just a tad worrisome, weight-wise. after the big ice storm this time last year (shhhh, don't remind Mother Nature) i imagine there's a lot of weakened branches, so i hope this batch of fluff melts off in the sunshine today. but cold temps for this week may prevent that...
so i think i'll go make me some breakfast cocoa and fire up the oven. Christmas cookies! nice to be able to bake some this year since i didn't have time or inclination last year after a week without power at just the wrong time. ah, the smell of cinnamon and chocolate! hmmm, wonder if there's room in my freezer for these goodies...
only 18 days left til Santa comes! (my grands are counting down)

Enjoy the loveliness! It was 7 lonely degrees here this morning, but at least it is sunny!

Yes, it's beautiful up here, too. The snow is melting in the warm sun, so I think it will be OK. And, the wind storms we've had over the last few weeks have certainly knocked down alot of the branches that are still hanging around from last year. I hope we never go through another storm like that again. That was rough...but I do have a generator now!

No snow here as yet, though they are teasing us with a 20% chance this afternoon, the only precipitation forecast for the next week. A broken overcast has replaced the freezing fog from last night. It was 20 F when I got up this morning, and it's not likely to get into the thirties today. Probably colder still tomorrow and Tuesday before a gradual warming trend. I know that may not seem cold to some of you in the single-digits, but ours is a damp cold which chills the bones unmercifully. I'm keeping the fire stoked and the coffee maker just completed a pot of Peet's Sumatra. I'm set for a day inside.

debio -- I'm up in Mass, a little further north from Roxanne. No, I had the same username, but I haven't posted much on the Fence for the last year or two, mostly lurked there.

It's chilly here, though relatively mild compared to all you guys, even Marty. We got down to 29 F last night but the outdoor salvias that are still blooming don't look burned at all. I posted some photos of the greenhouse over at the FG site because I couldn't figure out to do it here yet. I figured there was no reason not to use their new forum as a photo host. forums.finegardening.com/over-fence/garden-photos/my-new-greenhouse-photos

Cool pics, Karen. Is the middle one a variegated plectranthus or are we just happening to see a non-matching flower and foliage thing? Kind of like the tibuchina. You could drive some newer people nuts with that one.

The foliage on that middle on is a variegated plectranthus, but the flowers are a different plectranthus (P. saccatus). The tibouchina has leaned into a variegated ginger ('Vanilla Ice'), which I thought was a pretty cool combo.

What the heck happened? I mean, it was nice for so long, then, all of a sudden, it's COLD everywhere! Yuck. How many days till my favorite days in December (the shortest day of the year)?
Marty, you ain't kiddin.' The cold in the PNW will make you want to sit in a hot bathtub all day. What was that quote from Mark Twain...something about the coldest winter in his life was the summer he spent in San Francisco?

Yup, you got the quote exactly. SF is so foggy in the summer.

Marty, you ain't kiddin.' The cold in the PNW will make you want to sit in a hot bathtub all day. What was that quote from Mark Twain...something about the coldest winter in his life was the summer he spent in San Francisco? The quote is frequently attributed to Twain. Problem is, he most likely didn't say it. www.snopes.com/quotes/twain.asp (Not that the sentiment isn't exact *L*)

I think I had read that it was misquoted before, but there's too much useless information in my brain for it to have stuck. I like alot of the other misquotes, too. I guess we ought to just call them "twainish."

When we lived in Seattle, that July, the highest temp was 59*. Miserable. Just miserable. But August made up for it.

I thought I could see some plain green leaves at the end of the plec blooms. It's a pretty one. The two I got there are still happily blooming along.
